Annapolis Kid’s Martial Arts - Lessons from Danny Ives
A few years ago I went down to Maryland to train with one of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition teams in the United States - Team Lloyd Irvin. In Annapolis, I was able to see the kid’s martial arts classes of the great and awesome Danny Ives - a Team Irvin black belt.
I was able to train at 88 BJJ with Julius Park, and also at Lloyd Irvin’s main academy in Camp Springs, MD. Going down on this BJJ pilgrimage with my friend Micro (owner of a “BJJ gym in Rhode Island” http://blackdiamondmma.com]), I knew we were going to be in for something.
Without a doubt the adult Jiu Jitsu training was killer - I got some of the best rolls in. These included some matches with Mike Fowler and other top-level Maryland martial arts stars.
However, in terms of running a legitimate kids class (something I’m doing for myself now as I run a Jiu Jitsu class for children in New Bedford,MA), I saw Master Danny Ives working a room full of aspiring martial artists (starting around age 6) with a kind of grace I’d never seen.
The first thing he does is he grabs their attention with the curriculum techniques of the class - in addition to the fun martial arts-oriented games that he plays with them to develop handy coordination, balance, grip strength, and physical fitness.
Just from my own experience being around kids martial arts programs, I’d say that if you’re looking to get into kid’s martial arts in Annapolis - “Ivey League MMA” http://www.iveyleaguekids.com is the place to go.
Tell them Junior sent ya! Check out my program in Fall River, too :)
